Barcode Scanners Guide

Select scanners for fast, accurate checkout and inventory management.

Updated: 2026-07-25

Types of Scanners

Common types include handheld (wired or wireless), presentation (hands-free countertop), and mobile (built into smart terminals). Choose based on your scan volume and whether you need mobility around the store or warehouse.

1D vs. 2D Scanning

1D scanners read traditional barcodes, while 2D scanners also read QR codes and can capture from screens (mobile coupons, digital loyalty). If you accept QR payments or use QR-based inventory, choose a 2D-capable scanner.

Integration

Scanners connect via USB, Bluetooth, or serial. Ensure compatibility with your POS software. Some scanners support keyboard-emulation mode, but the POS application must support the scanner and required barcode formats. Hardware compatibility depends on processor, gateway, device model, software configuration, and merchant setup.

Scanner Setup Checklist

Confirm 1D or 2D symbology needs, POS app support, connection mode, scan distance, and whether configuration barcodes or a specific driver are required.

Test With Real Inventory

Scan sample labels and screen-based codes where relevant, confirm correct product mapping, and test returns and duplicate scans before full rollout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a barcode scanner with a mobile reader setup?

Yes, if your POS app supports scanner input. Bluetooth scanners pair with tablets and smartphones. Verify your app supports external scanner input before purchasing.
